Natalie Pesin asked on FaceBook yesterday morning for five songs that summed our existential condition. These touched on those around me as much as myself, frankly.  Then again, I had just fallen down the neighbors' unlit outdoors stairwell, hence thinking of the King.

Jawbox: "Consolation Prize" <=link to song; full album below:

The Kinks: "Shangri-La"

Albert King: "Born Under a Bad Sign"

Fairport Convention: "Farewell, Farewell"

Hüsker Dü: "Up in the Air"

and why not this, for this hour a day later:
Gordon Withers: "Consolation Prize"

Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Joe Morello, Gene Wright: "Blue Shadows in the Street"

John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Connie Kay, Percy Heath: "Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise"

Happier New Year.

And a message to the less pleasant folks clustering about, politically or otherwise:
